The Martian was released on October 2nd 2015, the movie stars Matt Damon as botanist Mark Watney who was left stranded on Mars (The Red Planet). The movie goes through series of events that test the renowned botanist and his survival skills. It begins by his team of astronauts leaving him behind he was thought to be dead after a super storm rolled through. Even still Nasa and his teammates do not give up hope and prepare a rescue mission to bring the botanist back home.

He does show throughout the movie his brains and survival skills. One particular series of events stands out in the movie, where he discovers how he can somehow grow vegetables using his own waste, not to appetizing, but it shows his amazing improvisation. The Martian also shows us how when put in hostile and “alien” situations we can survive simply with guts and wittiness. In the midst of avoiding death and every second danger, he continues to focus on somehow communicating with earth to let them know he is indeed alive.

As I watched the movie I personally loved the fact that the main character shows us how a human being can outsmart and out finesse the fierce and unpredictable nature of unknown planet. Mark Watney encounters several road blocks on his road to survival. It is obvious that his end goal is to do, what he has to do to last long enough on a foreign planet until he is rescued.

The martian opened up at the box office at 54 Million dollars, the film is also based on a best selling novel. The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott, he first made his name as a director with the creation of the movie “Alien” starring Sigourney Weaver. The Martian cast includes includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover. Opening at 54 million bucks the movie ballooned to 166 Million dollars and counting at the box office. The popularity of the movie was a surprise to some, movie critics were not to fancy on another “Mars” movie but all those doubts were put to bed after the first screening.

Without giving too much away in this article, believe this movie is a must see and it will keep you on your toes. It has a awesome mixture of cast away but with a better looking main character (Sorry Tom and Wilson). These types of movies have always captivated our imagination and would have us questioning ourselves, what we would do in that situation? It doesn’t hurt to add an awesome cast of characters to an intriguing story line of survival.

One more little thing, the Martian throws in a little twist you would have not expected. What kind of person would I be if I gave that one away. Go out and catch the Martian you will not be disappointed I guarantee it.

I almost want to become a space explorer after seeing this one.
